Arthritis & Chiropractic

Arthritis includes a number of diseases that result in inflammation, pain and stiffness, primarily in the joints and connective tissues. Connective tissues are the supporting structures for joints, such as muscles, cartilage, ligaments and tendons. In many cases, these diseases affect other parts of the body as well. So can your Alamosa Chiropractor help? Watch the video below to learn more.

Together, arthritis and related conditions are a major cause of disability in the United States, costing the U.S. economy more than $124 billion per year in medical care and indirect expenses such as lost wages and production - and costing millions of individuals their health, their physical abilities and, in many cases, their independence. As the population ages, the number of people with arthritis is growing.

Range-of-motion exercises, e.g. stretching and dance help maintain normal joint movement and increase joint flexibility. Can be done daily and should be done at least every other day. Strengthening exercises, such as weight lifting help improve muscle strength, which is important to support and protect joints affected by arthritis. Aerobic or endurance exercises, e.g. walking, bicycle riding, and swimming help improve the cardiovascular system and muscle tone and control weight. Swimming is especially valuable because of its minimal risk of stress injuries and low impact on the body.
